RESEARCH DURING OSLO BERGEN TRAIL 2025

Updated 10.12.2023

Background

A group of researchers from Oslo University Hospital (OUS) and the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvaret) will collect physiological data from runners volunteering to take part. The purpose is to identify factors of importance to performance - in a demanding race going on continuously for multiple days in various terrains and weather conditions. By participating, you will get the opportunity to contribute to increased knowledge about how ultra running affects the body.

Who are we?

Jonny Hisdal is Professor at the Circulation Laboratory (OUS/UiO). Jonny has extensive experience both with field research and as a triathlete. His research groups have studied athletes in connection with triathlons such as Norseman.

Erling Bekkestad Rein, PhD

(OUS, Forsvaret). Erling leads a research group in the Norwegian Armed Forces that studies challenges related to cold and winter, as well as physical stress in connection with selection.

Cecilie Longva Igesund (Forsvaret, OUS), project manager, ultra runner and OBT finisher 2021. Cecilie is a head nurse in the Norwegian Armed Forces Joint Medical Service.

She is the contact person for runners who wish to participate in the study / receive more information about the project.

The project

Two parallel studies will take place:

  • Measurement of heart rate continuously during the entire race. The purpose is to examine the connection between heart rate zones and completion of the race

  • Measurement of body composition (muscle/fat/fluid) before, during and after the race. The purpose is to look at gender differences in combustion during such long races and how this affects the result.

Recruitment of participants for the studies starts early in 2025. Participants will have access to their own analysis data. If you are interested in receiving more information about the project, fill in the fields below and press SEND. Alternatively, you can send an e-mail to cligesund@mil.no.
