REGULATIONS AND CONDITIONS

Updated 08.04.2025

These regulations and conditions apply to participation in the ultra-trail race Oslo Bergen Trail, organized by the voluntary organization Langt og Lenge. The website of the race is oslobergentrail.com.

Regulations for the race

Contests

Oslo Bergen Trail consists of the following contests:

  • Oslo-Bergen 500K (individual contest, abbreviated 500K)
  • Oslo-Bergen 500K TEAM (team contest, abbreviated 500K TEAM)
  • Vasstulan-Bergen 300K (individual contest, abbreviated 300K)
  • Voss-Bergen 130K (individual contest, abbreviated 130K)
  • Gullbotn-Bergen 37K (individual contest, abbreviated 37K)

Team

Each team in the 500K TEAM contest may consist of 2 or 3 persons.

The team must stay together all the way from start to finish, within a distance of 50 meters.

Participant

In the following, a participant means either a runner taking part in one of the individual contests or in the team contest.

Classes

The contests have two classes, Women and Men.

The teams (in 500K TEAM) consisting only of women participate in the women's class; all other teams participate in the men's class.

Main route and alternative routes

Each contest follows a given main route. Under difficult weather conditions the participant may in certain parts be directed to an alternative route. The participant shall only use an alternative route if this has been instructed by the organizer.

Results and time barriers

As a standard rule the participants are ranked on the final results list. However, the organizer may decide differently if the use of alternative routes makes it difficult to rank the participants.

To get an approved result in an individual contest, the runner must complete within the time limit.

To get an approved result in the team contest, the team must, with at least two members, complete within the time limit. If the team at some point is reduced to only one member, it is taken out of the competition.

Time barriers are given at the service stations. Individual runners and teams that have not left the service station by the specified time are taken out of the competition.

If a team is reduced to only one member it is taken out of the contest. The remaining runner will then have the option to convert to the 500K (individual) contest, given that the time barriers have not been exceeded at the time of conversion. If the runner reaches the finish before the time limit, he will get status as a finisher, but appear without ranking at the bottom of the results list.

Obligatory equipment

The participant has to carry obligatory equipment in accordance with a detailed list, which is published on the website. The obligatory equipment has to be carried by the participant along the whole route from start to finish.

Poles may be put in the drop-bag given they fit in their entirety inside a closed bag. Placing poles in the drop-bag is at own risk, the organizer does not take responsibility for any damage to poles during transport.

Self-support

The race is based on the principle of self-support, which means that each participant must carry all food, drink, and equipment needed along the route. It is however allowed for the participant, in person, to buy food and drink from shops and gas stations along the route.

To receive support from people not in the organizer’s staff is not allowed at any location along the route.

To create or use depots along the route is not allowed.

Pacing (to be accompanied by someone not participating in the race) is not allowed.

Drop-bag

The organizer will hand out two drop-bags to each participant:

  • A sports bag accessible to the participant at Noresund, Vasstulan, Voss, and Gullbotn.
  • A small drop-bag which is only sent to Vatnahalsen.

Only the bags given by the organizer can be used as drop-bags.

GPS tracking

Each team and each individual participant are carrying a GPS tracker, provided by the organizer. The tracker is handed out before the start and is then ready for use. The tracker is attached to the outside of the backpack, with a clear view of the sky.

To attach the tracker to the backpack one must use the means of attachment provided by the organizer. It is not allowed to use means of attachment that require tools to be removed (e.g., strips), as this may cause damage to the tracker.

Participants must not operate the trackers themselves unless the organizer gives notice of this.

If the participant happens to lose a tracker, then the participant will be billed for the organizer's cost of obtaining a new one.

On the service station

  • Participants must follow the organizer's instructions at the station
  • The bib must be presented to gain access to the food service and to the rest area
  • Runners who want a bed will be allocated a time slot of maximum 4 hours during which the bed can be used. In case of high demand, some waiting must be expected.

  • Companions of the participants have access only to a limited part of the station
  • When the participant arrives at a station, the crew will check the battery status of the tracker. If the battery level of a tracker is assessed as low, the tracker shall be set to charge while the participant rests.
  • The tracker is obligatory equipment, and it is the responsibility of the participant to carry the tracker out of the station.

Breaks for food and rest/sleep

The race is conducted without compulsory breaks— it is mainly up to the participant to decide when to take a break, but some restrictions apply concerning where to stay during the break.

Outdoors, the participant can take a break anywhere along the route. Indoors, one can only take a break:

    • In the service stations of the race
    • In tourist cabins and other accommodation, shops, gas stations etc., located along the route or at a short distance from the route. These places must be open to the public.

    • In other places near the route that provide shelter, when these are accessible to everyone, e.g. stone shelters, emergency shelters, lavvoers, gapahuks.

To take breaks in private houses, cabins, cars, mobile homes, etc. is not allowed and may lead to disqualification of the participant.

If a participant takes a break in other locations than the service stations, all eventual costs must be covered by the participant.

In some situations, the organizer may instruct a participant to take a break, e.g.,

    • under difficult weather conditions
    • for medical reasons
    • when a tracker needs charging

    Participants leaving the race

To quit the race is only allowed at the service stations.

The following applies to participants who quit or are taken out of the race:

    • The bib must be handed to the organizer
    • The tracker is handed in. Exception: The participant is on a team that continues, either in the team contest or in the situation where a single remaining team member converts to the individual contest
    • The drop bag and luggage is returned to the participant if feasible at the current station. Otherwise, the delivery is organized at a later station or at the finish.
    • The participant must arrange and pay for further transport, say, to Bergen or Oslo

If a participant taken out of the race chooses to continue:

    • This is outside the organizer's responsibility
    • The drop bag and luggage is returned to the participant if feasible at the current station
    • If granted by the participant, the drop bag and luggage may be transported to Bergen.
    • The participant is admitted to later stations, given that the participant arrives within the opening hours of the station. The participant will not have access to a drop bag service in this case.

    Medical assessment

A participant may be taken out of the race as a result of medical assessment. In a case of doubt, the team will be instructed to stop and rest to see if it is advisable for the participant to continue.
